|
| Mumbai, the capital of the state of Maharashtra
known for its skyline is the country’s technological
and financial hub. Gateway of India stands as the city’s
defining landmark. St.Thomas’ Cathedral and the
old town hall stand as reminders of the cotton boom prosperity
of late 19th century. Victoria terminus, the high watermark
of India’s Raj architecture and the bazaars of central
Mumbai also attractions for the visitor. An hour’s
boat ride from Colaba, the island of Elephanta offers
one of the more atmospheric escapes from the crowd of
the city. It is famous for the magnificent rock cut Shiva
temple. When the crush of the city’s central districts
gets too much, an evening stroll along Marine Drive and
Chowpatty beach is the ideal antidote
Further well known to all scholars and lovers of art and
culture the city of Aurangabad is more familiar as the
gateway to the ancient caves of Ajanta and Ellora, both
famous as treasure houses of Indian Art and Sculpture.
Stretches of endless silver sand and white surf beaches
wetted by the rush of the ‘azure’ Arabian
sea, the taverns, white churches and temples resting against
plush green padding fields and coconut trees, the nostalgic
atmosphere, longer days of sun, sand and sea, one only
feels very welcome to Goa. |
